Water Safety Awareness

Water Safety Awareness Message from West Midlands Fire Service

During the hot spell over the late May Bank Holiday weekend and half-term holiday, there were a number of tragic incidents around the country, many involving young people. The forecast over the coming weeks is for temperatures to rise again.

To keep yourself and your loved ones safe around water please be aware of the following:

· Of all drownings in 2025, 57% took place in inland water – canals, rivers, lakes, ponds – the type of bodies of water we have lots of in the West Midlands.

· Even if the weather is warm the water may be cold, causing your body to go inro cold water shock.

· If you fall into water Float to Live – put your head back, float on your back and keep yourself stable by using small movements of your hands.

· Once you are stable you may call for help or swim to the bank if it is feasible.

· Do not go into the water to save people or pets. Call 999 and ask for the Fire Service.

For more information about staying safe around water please visit the West Midlands Fire Service water safety page (https://www.wmfs.net/safety/water-safety/)

or the RNLI Education Resources page (https://rnli.org/youth-education/education-resources).

The Sue Yarwood-Smith Award for Service

This year, we have introduced a new award. Sue Yarwood-Smith was involved with us here at Pedmore for over 30 years, as a parent,a PTA member and as a governor and chair of governors, a position she held for over 20 years.

Unfortunately, she is no longer with us. We decided that it would be fitting for us to have an award, in her name, for service – something that Sue did in abundance.

The award will be given every year to a Year 6 child, voted on by staff in school, who has shown the value of service in their time at Pedmore.

This year, the award was presented at our Year 6 leavers’ service at St Peter’s, and the recipient of the first year of this award was Tom.

Very well done Tom!

Thank You

A big, massive ‘thank you’ on behalf of all the staff in school for you incredibly generous gifts. As I say every time, it is never expected and really humbling to receive from you.

Thank you once again.

Talent Show and Forest School

Talent Show
What a busy few weeks! Talent show, whole school forest school day and last sessions for Year 4 and Year 6.
The talent show was a great success and it was a joy to watch.
I am a great believer of letting children lead the way. There’s always an element of risk as you never quite know what’s going to happen but they always rise to the challenge.
There are some incredibly talented and courageous children at Pedmore, much of it I have seen regularly in forest school so it was great for them to share it with the rest of the school community too!
Well done to George for winning with the highest score.
Huge thank you to everyone who was involved.
Forest School
A great few weeks in the woods to finish my time at Pedmore.
Year 4 finished their sessions and it was a joy to spend my last day at school with Year 6. Many of these children I have taught since they were 3, so to have the privilege of having them every year for their time at Pedmore has been great.
We have so many shared memories which will laughed and cried over.
I couldn’t leave without giving every child one last chance in forest school as my passing gift to them. Every child spent some playing, toasting one last marshmallow and had the opportunity to be captivated by the amazing story telling of my good friend Danny English. I loved seeing how the children were so invested in his stories.
Thank you and Goodbye
I just want to take this opportunity to thank you all for all the support and kindness you have shown me over the years. It has been wonderful to work with all your brilliant children.
I have been part of Pedmore for the last 22 years as a parent, chair of PTA, a Governor and forest school leader.
I have been privileged to develop the school field into a beautiful little woodland which is rich with wildlife and a great space for children to play and connect to nature.
Huge thanks to Mr Dunn and Governors for giving me the autonomy to lead forest school in a way that I believe has been the most beneficial for the children.
Also huge thanks to the volunteers who have enabled that to happen.
Thank you for all the cards, gifts, messages and beautiful conversations I have had over the last few weeks. I am eternally grateful.
I will be now working full time on my programme with my community interest company called The Fine Collective to support the health and wellbeing of children in Stourbridge schools and I hope that I soon will be able to offer some support to Pedmore.

We also have some funded holiday provision which is open to your children. Please follow this link for details

Over the summer I have one last family festival on 20th August. Please see my booking page for details.
Thank you and have a great summer
