National funding for primary school physical education and sport
As a Church of England primary school, Pedmore CE Primary is committed to nurturing the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of our pupils. The Sports Premium, a government-funded initiative, plays a crucial role in helping us achieve this goal.
What is the Sports Premium?
The Sports Premium is additional funding provided to primary schools in England to improve the quality of the physical education (PE), sport, and physical activity that they offer. This funding is designed to help children develop healthy, active lifestyles and to promote participation in competitive sports.
The Sports Premium is used in the following ways:
- to develop or add to the PE and sport activities that our school already offers
- to build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years
There are 5 key indicators that schools should expect to see improvement across:
- the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
- the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
- increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
- broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- increased participation in competitive sport
Some of the ways we utilise the Sports Premium include:
- Hiring qualified sports coaches to work alongside our teachers, providing high-quality PE lessons and extracurricular activities
- Investing in new sports equipment and resources to enhance the variety and quality of our PE curriculum
- Organising inter-school competitions and tournaments, allowing our pupils to experience the joy of competitive sport
- Providing opportunities for our pupils to try new sports and activities, nurturing their respect for diverse physical pursuits
- Promoting active playtimes and lunchtime activities to encourage our pupils to stay physically active throughout the day
By focusing on these initiatives, we strive to instil in our pupils a lifelong love of physical activity, teamwork, and healthy living.
At Pedmore CE Primary, we believe that physical education and sport are integral to our pupils’ holistic development.
