Curriculum Statement

Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum with subjects being taught both discretely and as part of carefully planned topics. We plan to give a holistic approach to learning, sometimes led by children’s interests, whilst at the same time ensuring the development of individual subject skills and knowledge.

Children are taught as a whole class with both group, paired and individual work also widely used. We are developing a mastery approach in all subjects, teaching to all with high expectations. Children are then supported or challenged within this approach based on formative assessment by the teacher.

English

Whilst Reading and Writing are interwoevn in much of the English work we do, we do teach aspects of each area individually.

You can see our English overviews below:

Maths

Here at Pedmore CE Primary School we believe that ALL children are mathematicians who will show an enjoyment and curiosity for the subject enabling them each to become successful and competent mathematicians of the future.

We aim to enable all children to become fluent in mathematical fundamentals, develop a conceptual understanding and to recall and apply their knowledge to reason logically and solve problems.

From the Early Years Foundation Stage to the end of Key Stage Two we teach the three main aims of Mathematics in the National Curriculum, fluency, problem solving and reasoning, using a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach.

We follow guidance provided by the White Rose scheme and NCETM Mastering Number approach and teach areas of mathematics through a progressive journey of small steps leading to a deeper understanding of mathematics and mathematical vocabulary. We have continually developed our practice by utilising training and advisory support from the Central Maths Hub.

EYFS - Reception Class

Welcome to Reception!

Our days in Reception are all about Learning Through Play.

We want all the children to be happy, confident, independent learners who enjoy their time in school.

We look at different topics throughout the year and aim to follow the interests of the children too.

We teach phonics using Essential Letters and Sounds and we teach handwriting using the Kinetic Letters scheme. Both of these we teach daily.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework and the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile.

More information about what we teach in Reception can be found here:
